On Monday, a structure fire in the area of 32 Street South in Erickson resulted in one person being injured and brought to hospital.
Creston Fire Chief Jared Riel says around 30 firefighters responded to the blaze, along with 12 fire apparatus that supported the operation.
“When the first arriving units showed up, they found an outbuilding behind the residence that had a significant amount of smoke and fire coming from it. The firefighters went into action right away and did a great job of preventing the fire from spreading to the home and into the orchard. It was a good stop and knockdown from the firefighters.”
The structure, described as a garage with vehicles inside, was a complete loss, but fire crews were able to keep damage to the residence at a minimum.
“They did a great job of knocking the fire down and preventing that fire from moving into the residence, the house, for the people that live there. It caused some damage, but nothing significant because the occupants were able to get back in their house last night and spend the night in their house.”
Fire crews were able to confirm that all occupants were out of the building, with one resident suffering minor injuries who was sent to hospital.
Riel says the cause of the blaze is still unknown at the time.
Despite being able to respond quickly to the fire, Riel reminds the public to keep the surrounding streets clear of vehicles and onlookers lest they block crews trying to get in.
“There were people in their private vehicles, driving in or out, which can make it dangerous for the drivers of those fire vehicles trying to get in. So, it’s important to try and stay back and stay out of the way so we can get in there and set up in a timely manner and help the people in need.”
Riel added that it was a team effort in combating the blaze.
“A special thanks to the RCMP for being there, our ambulance crews for helping the residents and potentially the firefighters, and Fortis Electric in making sure they were there to deal with the power and keep everyone safe. I really appreciate the efforts from those organizations.”
Lastly, Riel reminds everyone to check their smoke alarms.
“Please remember to have smoke alarms in your buildings, in your homes, and make sure that they’re checked regularly. And then, in the event of a fire, please call 911 immediately to get the first responders coming. Any delay can cause more damage or other harm.”
