Those interested in the history of Creston will have a chance to learn through guided tours during History About Town Week.

From July 15 to July 20, guided tours will be taking place in the mornings and evenings.

Creston Museum manager Tammy Bradford says it’s a great way to learn more about Creston in an entertaining way.

“History about Town Week is fun. It’s when we get out of the museum walls and take people around and show them all the amazing history that’s all around town.”

There will be five different tours: Downtown Creston/The Great Creston Bank Robbery, the Dow Addition, Settlers and Pioneers, Coming to Canada, and Grain Industry and Elevators.

Grain Industry and Elevators is a new tour this year, something Bradford is excited about.

“We are focusing on the grain elevators downtown. We’ll be going through the red one. Unfortunately, we can’t go up in the red one, but we will go through it. We look at the reclamation of the flats and the start of the grain industry, how the elevators work, and how they fit into the marketing and shipping of grain from the valley.”

Bradford says learning about the history behind Creston and the valley is something everyone should try.

“It’s really easy to miss as we go about our day-to-day lives. We’re not necessarily looking at the buildings or wondering why this is the way it is, or thinking about the people who built the community. So it’s a fun way to do that, just to get out and stomp around a little bit and check out some of these things that we often don’t even notice.”

Although all the tours will be outside during the current heat wave, Bradford is confident they will be comfortable.

“That’s why we have them at 10 in the morning and 7 at night,” explains Bradford.

“We’re hoping to avoid the hottest part of the day. We do recommend people bring water and sun hats and be prepared for the heat.”

The tours can fill up quickly, so those interested are encouraged to sign up on the Creston Museum website ahead of time.
