Kootenay Employment Services is launching a program to help those facing unemployment enter the job market or make a career change.
CONNECT will be available to those 16 years of age or older who are looking for a bit of help.
“We help you to review your skills and strengths, assess and develop computer skills and learn office software, explore how to market yourself, evaluate upgrading and skills training courses, research and meet employers,” said Barbara Hunter, Regional Lead Coordinator.
Those who enter the program will take part in eight weeks of in-class workshops, hopefully followed by employment or training.
“This can be in the form of job placement, as well,” said Hunter,
“Clients may have identified an area of upgrading or training and may move into a learning opportunity.
Those eligible to enter the program must be unemployed, working less than 20 hours a week, or need a higher wage or more hours. They have to be at least 16 and be legally able to work in Canada.
Those who are facing challenges such as housing instability, mental health challenges, lacking employment skills, and not having a grade 12 education may apply.
“We facilitate workshops on professional communication in the workplace, skills and strengths, critical thinking and problem-solving, as well as self-care. There is a mental health part to it as well where we will talk about strategies for anxiety in the workplace, mindfulness, and learning how to slow things down in order to really think clearly and respond appropriately.”
The program will run from Sept. 23 to Nov. 15 and will be available in Creston and Cranbrook.
“CONNECT covers the steps our community members need to apply for work in the region, it also offers an opportunity to work with a facilitator who helps each person discover new opportunities in employment and create confidence as they build a tool belt of skills while connecting to their community.”
