Creston community to recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with annual march

The annual Truth and Reconciliation Day march will take place on Monday as the Yaqan Nukiy (Lower Kootenay Band) and the Creston community make their way up Highway 21 to mark the holiday’s significance.

The first march was started years ago by community members Tina Jimmy and Cheryl Louie.

“I credit them. This was their vision and what was once just the two of them walking has blossomed into something that is just outstanding for everyone involved,” added Nasukin Jason Louie.

“Seeing all those orange shirts on those days is just phenomenal.”

Last year’s march saw an outpouring of support as those throughout the Creston Valley joined together to march.

“The last couple of years here it became a larger scale event where we invite anybody who wants to participate in the walk in the spirit of Truth and Reconciliation,” said Louie.

Ever since the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was recognized in 2021, communities throughout BC have taken the day as a chance to engage and learn about the Indigenous populations that call BC home and the impact settlers had on their culture and people.

Louie says there are always ways to engage.

“I’m glad that it is a statutory holiday now and anybody can do whatever they want on a stat holiday, but wherever you are throughout the area, check out the local First Nations webpage or Facebook. There are always things you can participate in.”
