Short-term fix on long-term shelter problem

Winter has officially arrived with snow blanketing much of the Kootenays, however, what hasn’t arrived is Creston’s winter shelter.

The Town of Creston is yet to name a permanent shelter location with Mayor Arnold DeBoon saying there is still much work to be done.

“Our staff are still working on a longer-term solution and there’s been a lot of work and thought put into it but we’re not near the finish line on that one yet.” said Deboon.

“We will have at least some sort of emergency services from cold weather but as far as an actual shelter at this point it looks like that may not be the case.”

Creston council voted down a permanent homeless shelter on Canyon Street in April 2024, claiming it to not be the right location, however, a location has not been found.
