The Town of Creston is continuing to advocate for funding to increase security at the U.S. border.
Councillors discussed border security measures during the February 11 Council meeting, particularly whether the town’s request for increased security had been deferred or not.
This comes after Council voted unanimously in favour of submitting a letter to the federal and provincial governments for increased border support in December.
CAO Michael Moore told councillors that the town has not submitted its letter to the powers that be yet, but noted he has been actively involved in ensuring the community’s needs are recognized by all levels of government in recent weeks.
“I did have a conversation with our MLA and Minister of State for Local Governments, Brittny Anderson, twice now in the last couple of weeks. I did request a meeting with the Solicitor General, whether in Creston or Victoria, where the mayor and the staff sergeant would go to provide the new minister with an update about our unique policing challenges in the valley.”
Additionally, Moore says there is a need to advocate for increased federal funding for police resources in the community.
With the federal government’s recent announcement of a significant funding boost for federal policing, Moore says the town is committed to ensuring Creston is included in the conversation and receives a fair share of these resources.
“Another conversation I’ve requested is to advocate for the increase in federal funding for the police. They’ll [the province] be entering those conversations with the federal government soon, and of course, the federal government has announced a significant increase in funding for that, so we’d like to make sure that we’re part of that conversation to get federal policing back here in our community.”
Advocating for federal support, according to Moore, will be a critical part of ongoing discussions, ensuring that the local police force is adequately equipped to address both current and future challenges.
