The Creston Museum is paying homage to its historic heritage buildings this week in honour of Heritage Week.
Heritage Week is held annually by Heritage BC during the third week of February and aims to showcase, and celebrate, the province’s rich and diverse heritage.
The theme for this year’s event, which runs from February 17–23, is Pastimes in Past Times, which invites everyone to explore how historical leisure activities have shaped the cultural fabric of their communities.
In honour of Heritage Week, the Creston Museum is hosting its ‘Brown Bag History’ event on Saturday, which Museum Manager Tammy Bradford says will delve into the town’s heritage buildings and the stories of the people who they once belonged to.
“On Saturday at 12 o’clock, we have our Brown Bag History presentation, which focuses specifically on buildings that are still standing, how they’re all connected, and the stories of the people who once lived in them.
We’ve got many buildings that are still standing, related to the local agricultural industries, and some of the buildings downtown are well worth a second look—there’s a lot to see.”
Bradford says Heritage Week encourages people to stop and explore their community’s history a little more, as she believes our past continues to influence and shape what the community is today.
“So much of what we have here in local history is visible, but we often walk past it without paying much attention. It’s good to have a reminder every now and then to stop, look around, and see how we’re all connected to it. Our past is still influencing us; it shapes who we are today and what the community is. So it’s always good to stop, take a look, and remind yourself of that.”
Beyond Saturday’s event, the Creston Museum is always happy to share the town’s local history with those interested, in whatever form it takes.
“We’re always glad to share local history with people, in whatever form it takes. Whether it’s talking about a historic building, digging through some of the photos, maps, and newspapers we have in the archives, or just coming down and enjoying a visit to the Museum itself, we’re always happy to see people.”
